Are you looking for a specific type or breed of pet? Is time a factor in your search for the perfect pet? Is it an overwhelming experience for you to visit our shelter?

Answered yes to any of the above? Then welcome to FIRST CONTACT!

First Contact, sponsored by Animal Care Clinic, is a concierge-type service where LHS works one-on-one with you to identify the type of animal that best fits your lifestyle. For a $25 registration fee (*plus tax) that is later applied to your adoption fee, we create a unique registration for you based on your preferences: breed, energy level, grooming, and age, among other things.  Once you’re registered, we go to work!  When a potential match arrives at LHS, we’ll contact you regarding the pet’s availability.

Register for First Contact

  1. Think about your perfect pet and what characteristics you’re looking for.  Do some research to confirm your lifestyle fits with a desired breed’s requirements (such as energy level, grooming, and special feeding).  As a start, review our Breed Characteristics summary for dogs.

  2. Complete our First Contact form. Look for an email (or phone call) from our First Contact Coordinator within 2-3 days of the online form submission, which will walk you through the final registration step.

Service Details

  1. Regular LHS adoption fees apply to First Contact matches: $79-$249 for puppies and dogs, $1-$89 for kittens and cats, and $5 and up for bunnies and other small animals. Please note: The $25 registration fee will be applied toward adoption fee.

  2. Some matches can take a matter of days, others weeks or months.  It might take a bit of time and patience, but we can usually find what you are looking for!

  3. When a pet matching your specified criteria becomes available for adoption, we will contact you.

  • The pet will be placed on courtesy hold to allow you time to come in for a meet-and-greet, which will need to take place at least 1 hour before closing time of the following day.

  • In the event we cannot reach you by phone during the courtesy hold, the animal will be offered to the next First Contact adopter.

  • While we will be as flexible as possible with your schedule, we must schedule meet-and-greets promptly as LHS has hundreds of animals in our care daily and dozens of adoptions occurring every day.

Additional Information

  • In FY15-16, 564 adopters found their perfect match using our First Contact service!

  • First Contact places all types of animals—dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, birds, and more.

  • Over 25% of the animals entering into shelters are purebred—all breeds, all ages, all colors.

  • Only 40% of animals entering into homes come from shelters and First Contact helps to attract a new group of pet-seeking customers into our adoption centers; those who may have never considered adoption before or who were intimidated by the adoption process.

  • We realize many pet seekers can feel overwhelmed in an adoption center when there are so many different types of animals to choose from.  Through First Contact, we provide the enhanced level of customer service necessary to put new adopters at ease, making the process more inviting.

  • First Contact is simple and convenient, and it allows you the opportunity to make adoption “the best option” while saving you valuable time and leg-work searching for your new adopted best friend.

*Due to Kentucky State House Bill 487 being passed and signed into law in April 2018, we are now required by law to charge sales tax on event admission, all services, veterinary services (including vaccinations, surgeries and microchipping) and adoptions effective July 1st, 2018. Regretfully this law does not exclude 501(c) (3) non-profits from collecting sales tax and submitting to the state of Kentucky on these services.
