Court-Ordered Community Service hours are available at LHS. They are approved on a case by case basis by the Outreach Coordinator. The fee for this program is $50 (*plus tax) per person. Individuals who need to fulfill court-mandated community service hours may do so at the Lexington Humane Society if they meet the following guidelines:

  • Are over the age of 18.
  • Have no convictions or charges of sexual crimes, violent crimes, theft or crimes against animals; felonies, animal/child abuse/neglect, weapons charges, sex crimes, violent crimes, theft, or resisting arrest.
  • Provide court documentation stating the offense, number of hours to be completed, and date by which they must be completed.

Community service volunteers are scheduled only between the hours of 12pm and 5pm, any day of the week, and attendance is strictly enforced. Responsibilities include administrative and facility help, as well as custodial & janitorial services - direct work with the animals is not available.

Our community service program has limited capacity, with no guarantee that a timely opening will be available. Submitting a request will only put you on the waiting list. When an opportunity becomes available, our Outreach Coordinator will contact those on the waiting list.

All community service hours must be scheduled in advance. Drop-ins are not accommodated. Interested individuals who meet the minimum requirements stated above must submit the form below.

Community Service Agreement

As a Court-Ordered Community Service volunteer for LHS, I understand and agree to the following:

1. I understand that LHS may not be able to provide all the service hours I am required to complete by my given deadline.

2. I agree to provide all the required documentation in advance to LHS regarding my community service and that I will not be able to serve until all documentation has been received by LHS.

3. I understand that my responsibilities include administrative and facility help, as well as custodial & janitorial services. Direct work with shelter animals is not available.

4. I understand that others are waiting to complete their community service hours, as well. I will complete my service in a regular, timely manner, committing to a schedule that is productive and efficient for the program. I will notify LHS when I am no longer available for community service.

5. I agree to schedule my community service hours in advanced. Drop-ins are not accommodated. Attendance is strictly enforced.

6. I agree to adhere to my schedule and to sign-in and out procedures. I will notify the Outreach Coordinator when unavailable for my shift. Failure to report to service on scheduled days without prior notification of absence is cause for termination from the program.

7. I agree to limit my activity to my assigned work area unless otherwise directed by the Outreach Coordinator or staff supervisor.

8. I agree to maintain appropriate attire and a well-groomed appearance.

9. I agree to treat staff, volunteers and other guests of LHS with courtesy, sensitivity, and professionalism. I will seek staff assistance for any questions or situations beyond my knowledge or training.

10. I agree to communicate work-related problems or concerns to the Outreach Coordinator in a timely manner.

11. I have read the Community Service Agreement and agree to abide by the rules.

I understand that LHS reserves the right to terminate my volunteer status at any time, for any circumstances which, in the judgment of the Outreach Coordinator would make my continued service as a volunteer contrary to the best interest of the agency. I have read and understand each of the above conditions.

By submitting the form below, I certify that all statements in this volunteer application are true and have been given voluntarily. I understand that my participation in the community service program at LHS is strictly on a volunteer basis and that volunteers are not classified as employees, agents or servants of LHS and thus any injuries I might sustain during the course of my community service activities are not entitled to coverage under LHS worker’s compensation policy. I agree to release and hold harmless LHS from and against any and all loss, damage, claims, liability, costs and expenses of any nature whatsoever, including without limitation, attorney’s fees and disbursements, arising from or occasioned by my participation in the community service program at LHS. I understand there are certain risks inherent in an animal shelter environment and I accept these risks.

*Due to Kentucky State House Bill 487 being passed and signed into law in April 2018, we are now required by law to charge sales tax on event admission, all services, veterinary services (including vaccinations, surgeries and microchipping) and adoptions effective July 1st, 2018. Regretfully this law does not exclude 501(c) (3) non-profits from collecting sales tax and submitting to the state of Kentucky on these services.
