Volunteering:

Time is a valuable gift to offer LHS and the animals we serve.  Volunteers are very important to the Lexington Humane Society!  LHS relies on the assistance of caring, hardworking volunteers to make so many dreams come true.  Our shelter offers volunteer opportunities in the following areas:

  • Doggie Bank Delegates
  • Foster care
  • Pet Partner (walking animals at either our main shelter or Petsmart satellite center)
  • Shelter Greeters
  • Humane education
  • Office Mates
  • Special events (Beastie Ball, Mutt Putt, Mutt Strut, Portable Information Centers & much more!)
  • Teen volunteer mentors

Hours vary with assignment.  LHS volunteers must be at least 14 years of age, abide by the shelter volunteer policy and attend a volunteer orientation session. We ask that volunteers commit to a minimum of  four hours a month for at least four months.

How to Get Started:

Volunteers (Ages 18 and up)

We are excited to have you as an LHS volunteer!

  1. Complete the online application or request a hard copy by calling (859) 233-0044 x254.    If your availability and interests coincide with available volunteer positions, we will contact you to schedule you for a phone interview.
  2. Interview - Prospective volunteers interview one-on-one with the LHS Volunteer Coordinator to discuss personal goals and to determine the most suitable volunteer assignment.
  3. Attend training class - To learn about safety procedures, pet adoptions, animal behavior and other important information about LHS's many programs, volunteers also participate in a two-hour hour training class.

Teen Volunteers (Ages 14-17)
Our teen volunteers are huge assets to our organization!  Teen volunteers learn to work with our animals in a safe manner while being monitored at our shelter.  A separate orientation is conducted for teenagers between the ages of 14 and 17. Pre-registration for teen orientation is required. Community Service for School (Ages 14 and up)
LHS community service projects benefit the shelter and ultimately the animals in so many ways! Although the projects do not involve direct contact with our animals, there are various opportunities for animal-loving students to contribute and assist with our day-to-day operations.

Community activities typically include the following:

  • Grounds maintenance
  • Gardening
  • Washing windows
  • Folding laundry
  • Cleaning animal crates & cages
  • Sweeping & mopping
  • Light desk work
  • Animal food & supply drives
  • Painting & light maintenance

To participate, students must be at least 14 years of age, complete a community service application, and sign a waiver of liability (students under 18 will need a parent or guardian's signature).

For academic credit, please call at least one month before you
r academic deadline to check for availability. Space is limited.  Applications are taken at the beginning of each semester.

We are currently unable to accomodate court-ordered, traffic diversion or Kentucky Works community service.
