Spring time is known as the season of LOVE.  Love comes in so many forms – the love of family, the love of friends -- but none can compare to the unconditional love we receive from our pets.  Through thick and thin, our pets never cease to adore us.   As the saying goes – “Animals are not our whole lives, but they make our lives whole.”

I have experienced this unconditional love firsthand!  In my house, love has a scruffy face and a wagging tail.  Her name is Millie, my 4 year old bundle of joy.

Millie was brought to the Lexington Humane Society (LHS) after she had been hit by a car.  In addition to treating her injuries, our on staff veterinarian altered Millie, which is standard for all animals placed up for adoption.   During Millie’s surgery, five mammary tumors were found and our vet removed over a pound of malignant tumors from Millie’s tiny ten pound body.  Thankfully, the cancer had not spread to major organs and Millie’s prognosis is far better than it would have been without the surgery.

I happened to stop by surgery that day and, after hearing of Millie’s condition, I knew I would be taking this little dog home to foster during her recovery!  While I had sworn to all who know me I would not be adopting any more pets, my dog, Lexi, decided otherwise.  They became immediate friends.  Millie was home to stay!

milliesecondchancesMillie is now a “spokesdog” for  LHS and our “Spay’sTheWay” Program.  After all, being spayed literally saved her life.  And Millie is not alone.  We encounter many animals in similar situations – situations that could have been avoided if only the animal had been altered.

Show your pets you Love them by spaying and neutering them!  Not only will you prevent unwanted litters, you’ll help your best friend live a longer, healthier life.

And show the over 5,000 animals cared for by LHS each year that you Love them by supporting our efforts to Give Love, Teach Love, and Adopt Love!  Your gift, whether $5 or $500, will help us continue to educate the community on responsible, life-long pet ownership, promote the importance of spay/neuter, and encourage adoption as the best option.  Together we will help end pet overpopulation and show all the animals in our community they are Loved.
